MARIN OPEN TENNIS LEAGUE is a Bay Area Tennis League dedicated to allowing players to enjoy the game in an atmosphere of friendship, camaraderie and stress free competition. Your Feedback, Comments and Suggestions are welcome. MARIN OPEN TENNIS LEAGUE is a self-scheduled, co-ed league offering ability groups from novice to Open players. Established in 1992 the league offered exclusively singles play. By popular demand doubles play was incorporated in January of 2001. The league has close to 1500 active members." Our Mission Statement – Marin Open Tennis League is a Tennis League with a difference. We do follow USTA rules and differ only from them in the rating of each player. We ENCOURAGE players to play stronger opponents to improve their own game. Conversely, a player would move to a lower division if he/she was defeated consistently in the division of his/her choice. Moving to a lower division and winning some, if not all, of the matches restores the players confidence and he/she is then ready to attempt the higher division again in the next session. This is what “BUILDS TENNIS”! We are also different insofar that we promote friendship and camaraderie. We want our players to have FUN playing tennis and not be overly concerned about the winning or the losing. We are also becoming a "Green" organization by managing the league electronically. We are using very little paper hoping to save a tree or two.. However, we love to hear from you via email or telephone and will always try to attend to your needs the best we can. Here are a few suggestions to help you make your participation as successful as possible. Please start making dates with your assigned opponents right away. Do not omit to report the scores within 3 days of playing your match to our office at 435-2193. You can also fax them to 435-1920, or E-mail: marinopen@pacbell.net..Scores that are not reported before the posting deadline (see below) are posted as a "No Play" and could prevent a player from qualifying for the Quarter- or Semi –Finals. Please make a serious attempt to play all the matches assigned to you. We know that there are occasions when a player has to withdraw because of injury or an unforeseen change in business or personal plans. Do keep in mind, however, that the other players on your draw have signed up TO PLAY and are extremely disappointed when defaults are given without a serious reason. Should the occasion arise that you have to withdraw, please call this office to notify us so that we can make the appropriate calls to the other players in your division and, if possible, replace you with a player from the "Sub" list. Just to ignore and NOT RETURN the telephone calls or, even worse, to just not show up for a match is really, really "UNCOOL". Should one player in a scheduled match become injured and unable to play, it is permissible to replace him/her with a sub of same strength. However, the change needs to be authorized by us and is not permissible for the semis or finals. As mentioned above you all sign up to play and not take defaults. THIRD SET RULE: Before starting the match, discuss with your opponent if you plan to play a third set or if you want to play three full sets. If you cannot agree the third set will have to be played as a 10 point tie-break. Please do remember to always be equipped with a new can of balls. We request that USTA rated tennis balls are being used. The winner of the match receives the unopened can as a "token trophy". If you need to cancel a scheduled match, please call your opponent at least 24 hours ahead of time. If you leave a message on voicemail or an answering machine, please make certain that the message was received and acknowledged. It is always a good idea to confirm the date on the day of play. If you have a cell phone available it would be a great idea to exchange cell phone # numbers so that you can be reached in case your opponent gets stuck in traffic or has another conflict that prevents him/her from showing up on time. Should you have problems understanding the format of the draw or have any other questions at all, please do not hesitate to call us (435-2193) and we will answer any question you might have. We are committed to help you have fun! We are also always interested in hearing your comments and suggestions on how we can improve the service we provide to the Singles/Doubles Tennis Players of the Bay Area.
